She said that the newly sanctioned seats will be distributed among leading institutions, including Government Medical College Srinagar, Government Medical College Jammu, and Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura. The expansion is expected to significantly enhance the capacity of these institutions to offer super-specialty training and deliver advanced patient care. “This expansion will strengthen tertiary care, build specialist capacity, and create more opportunities for our young doctors within J&K,” Itoo said, adding that the initiative will also help reduce the burden on patients who currently travel outside the Union Territory for specialized treatment. In a post on X, the minister reiterated the government’s commitment to upgrading healthcare institutions and improving access to quality medical services. “A major boost to advanced healthcare and medical education in J&K. NMC has approved 24 new/increased DM and MCh super-specialty seats for AY 2025–26 across GMC Srinagar, GMC Jammu, and SKIMS. This expansion will strengthen tertiary care and create more opportunities for our young doctors,” she stated.
